Bioenergy will play a major role in achieving the EU’s 2030 climate and energy objectives, AEBIOM Secretary General Jean-Marc Jossart said at the 6th AEBIOM Bioenergy Conference in Brussels in May. “Not only will biomass contribute to 50% of the EU 2020 renewable energy target, but it will also play a major role in the revitalisation of our economy and in job creation,” Jossart said.

The AEBIOM Bioenergy Conference brought together 150 representatives of the global bioenergy sector to discuss the future of bioenergy and to address the opportunities and challenges facing biomass developments in Europe.

Opening the conference, Marie Donnelly, Director of Renewables, Research and Innovation and Energy Efficiency at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy, confirmed that the potential of biomass is greater than what has been achieved so far. Mrs. Donnelly stressed that biomass is an indigenous resource and its use should be maximised to improve energy security in Europe.

The AEBIOM conference in 2015 focused in particular on the role of bioenergy beyond 2020 and its place within the 2030 climate and energy framework. Speaking at the conference, Giulio Volpi, Policy Officer from the Renewable Energy Unit at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy, said that bioenergy would have a clear role beyond 2020, especially in long distance transport and in the industrial sector, where it will provide high-temperature heat.
