The TOTAL Multi-Energy fuelling station has opened its doors to drivers of hydrogen-powered fuel-cell cars in Munich. Equipped with innovative refuelling technology from Linde AG, the station is now home to the only public hydrogen fuelling service in the Bavarian state capital.
Linde was commissioned by TOTAL and BMW, which will be the hydrogen station's main user, to install its high-pressure cryogenic hydrogen pumps – also known as cryopumps – at the site in Munich’s Detmoldstrasse.
The launch of the Munich station followed the launch of Germany's first motorway hydrogen filling station in May this year as part of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP). Speaking at the inauguration, Dorothee Bär, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure said that politics, science and industry had worked together to bring hydrogen mobility to the brink of market entry.
“Together with industry, we have provided a total of 1.4 billion euros for research, development and demonstration projects up until 2016. We are now increasingly tackling the development of infrastructure: by the end of 2015, 50 hydrogen filling stations will be available in metropolitan areas and along major roads,” she said.
May also saw the launch of a new hydrogen fuelling station in the Austrian city of Innsbruck, with the capacity to fuel six vehicles per hour. This H2 station, which is located on one of Europe’s key transit routes, will make it possible for fuel-cell vehicles to travel from Germany to Italy.
The Innsbruck station is Austria’s second public hydrogen fuelling station, and bridges the existing H2 hubs in Munich and Bolzano. The station was built as part of the EU-funded HyFIVE (Hydrogen for Innovative Vehicles) project. HyFIVE aims to equip a number of cities across Europe (London, Copenhagen, Stuttgart, Munich, Innsbruck, Bolzano) for the upcoming commercialisation of fuel-cell vehicles.
To meet rising demand for H2 infrastructure build-up, Linde opened the world’s first small-scale series production facility for hydrogen fuelling stations at its application centre in Vienna last year.
