The European Technology Platform on SmartGrids (ETP SG) will play an important role in making the vision laid out in the SET-Plan Integrated Roadmap a reality, ETP SG Vice-Chair Richard Charnah said at the ETP SG 5th General Assembly in Brussels at the end of April.
“SmartGrids technologies are not only a vision from experts, several are ready for large-scale implementation and many are already implemented on a real-network scale in Europe and around the world; the action plan proposed within the Integrated Roadmap should facilitate their wide-scale deployment,” Charnah said.
Acknowledging the ETP SG’s role as a forum for the crystallisation of policy and technology research for the smart grids sector, European Commission Director for Renewables, Research and Innovation Marie Donnelly said in her opening speech at the ETP SG General Assembly that research and innovation were key in the Energy Union. “In response to the clear priorities of the Energy Union, the SET-Plan structure will be updated to deliver results in an integrated and collaborative way," she said.
The 5th General Assembly also served as an occasion to present and debate the ETP SG view on future research priorities for the ongoing H2020 programme. In its report entitled Consolidated View of the ETP SG on Research, Development and Demonstration Needs in the Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2016-2017, the ETP SG aims to identify for the European Commission and other stakeholders those areas and topics considered of utmost importance to be researched and demonstrated in the years to come.
