EU Member States collectively forecast to exceed 20% target for renewable energy sources

26/01/2011
According to the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC), 25 out of the 27 National Renewable Energy Action Plans submitted to the European Commission expect to reach or exceed their 2020 targets domestically.

EREC calculations show that 15 Member States expect to exceed their2020 binding targets (AU, BG, CZ, DE, DK, EL, ES, PL, HU, LT, MT, NL,SE, SL, SK). Only Italy and Luxembourg plan to resort to cooperationmechanisms to achieve their 2020 goals. “Member States confirm theimportant role of renewable energy sources in Europe’s future energymix,” said EREC’s President, Arthouros Zervos in a communiqué issued on5 January 2011.

“The share of renewable energy is forecast to amount to 20.7% by 2020,which is 0.7 percentage points above the 20% target set at EU level,”explained Arthouros Zervos. “This confirms EREC’s view that the EU willexceed its target”.

More than one third of electricity is projected to come from renewableenergy sources in 2020. The share of low-carbon energy and renewablesources in electricity consumption is predicted to increase to 34.3% in2020, with wind energy representing 14%, hydropower 10.5%, biomass6.6%, photovoltaics 2.4%, Concentrated Solar Power 0.5%, geothermalenergy 0.3% and ocean energy 0.2%.

More than one fifth of heating consumption is expected to come fromrenewables in 2020. Renewable heating and cooling should reach 22.2% in2020, with biomass representing 17.2%, heat pumps from aerothermal andhydrothermal energy 1.6%, solar thermal energy 1.2% and geothermalenergy 1.3%.

The share of renewables in transport is forecast to reach 11.27% ofdiesel and petrol consumption in 2020.
