
The JRC presented on 7 July 2011 the first comprehensive catalogue of smart electricity grid projects in Europe. The report – launched in Warsaw during the conference "Scientific Support to a Competitive European Low Carbon Economy: Energy, Transport and Emerging Technologies" - is based on a review of 219 projects, accounting for a total investment of about €5.5 billion.
Smart grids are intelligent electricity networks which will play akey role in reaching the EU's energy efficiency goals for 2020. The JRCreport showcases how smart grids can help integrate more renewables,accommodate electric vehicles, give more control to consumers overtheir energy consumption, avoid blackouts and restore power quicklywhen outages occur.
