The final users’ meeting for the Nanophotonics for Energy Efficiency Network of Excellence (N4E) took place in Barcelona in December 2014. Starting in January 2010, this project aimed to promote nanophotonics research in energy-efficient applications by bringing together different nanophotonic laboratories and research groups across Europe.

The final meeting, which was open to N4E Project Consortium Members and to all Associate Partners, was an opportunity to exchange ideas and explore synergies. The event placed a special emphasis on how to continue collaboration and common activities beyond the project’s duration.

Nine institutions in six European countries participated in the network, representing more than 130 scientists, engineers, technicians, and managers in the field. This was further enhanced by a comprehensive Advisory Board with the participation of major companies, and an Associate Membership scheme open to all interested parties.

The network of excellence carried out research work aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of light emitting and light harvesting devices. This is accomplished by enhancing the interaction between light and matter at the nanoscale. The know-how, expertise and resources of all consortium members were leveraged through collaboration and strategic agreements, and this was further enhanced by involving stakeholders outside the consortium through an Associate Membership scheme and a Young Researcher Exchange programme.
