Strong JRC presence at the 2014 European Energy Market Conference

02/09/2014
European Energy Market (EEM) is an annual conference, organised by the Institute of Electric Power Engineering (IEEE), which focuses on energy markets and operation of power systems in a competitive environment. Among the work presented in the 11th edition of the conference, were four papers showcasing current research performed at the Joint Research Centre's Institute for Energy and Transport.

Two of the papers were on energy system modelling using the linear optimization bottom-up technology model JRC-EU-TIMES. The first examines how different decarbonisation pathways affect the power sector's technological deployment to 2050, while the second paper assesses the cost-effectiveness of electricity storage technologies in the EU28 energy system in the same time frame. Both papers model "reference" scenarios complemented by a number of decarbonisation pathways.

Also within the area of energy storage, the third study assesses the profitability of an investment in a pump hydro storage plant (PHS) located in Italy. It deals with the strategic role of storage at system level, in order to include wider benefits to the overall market assessment.

The final paper focuses on the development of the ocean energy sector, identifying the necessary steps that are required in order to facilitate the development and deployment of ocean energy technologies towards the formation of a viable and successful industry.

The papers are available in the IEEE conference proceedings:

  1. Decarbonised pathways for a low carbon EU28 power sector until 2050 (view abstract)
  2. Assessing the role of electricity storage in EU28 until 2050 (view abstract)
  3. Market valuation of a hypothetical pump-hydro storage plant in the Italian power system (view abstract)
  4. SI-ocean strategic technology agenda for the ocean energy sector: From development to market (view abstract)

The 11th edition, of the International Conference on the EEM conference was organised by the IEEE and Lodz University of Technology in Krakow on May 28-30, 2014.
